New Poll Released by Statara Solutions Shows Voters’ Concerns Around Misinformation, Government Distrust

Washington, D.C. – Today, Statara Solutions, LLC released the results of a poll they conducted that found many voters harbor strong distrust in foundational elements of democracy, including the U.S. government, social media, cable news stations, talk radio, traditional newspapers, and issue experts. The majority of participants trust information:

  • From the U.S. government most/some of the time;
  • From social media sites not often or never;
  • From cable news stations most/some of the time;
  • From talk radio not often or never;
  • From traditional newspapers most/some of the time; and
  • From issue experts most/some of the time.

The poll also asked participants which they felt to be the bigger problem: The spread of misinformation and conspiracy theories, or the government and media lying to or withholding information from the public. The poll found that 51.9% of participants believe misinformation and conspiracy theories are the bigger problem (39.5% strongly and 12.4% somewhat), and 48.2% of respondents believe government and media lying to be the bigger problem (38.5% strongly, 9.7% somewhat).

“As advocacy groups, media and candidates on both sides of the aisle head into election year, these findings can help inform communications and outreach strategies,” said Bryan Whitaker, CEO at Statara Solutions. “Trust needs to be built with voters across the political spectrum who remain very  wary of misinformation, the media, and the government.”

The poll was fielded among a randomly selected online non-probability panel sample consisting of 1,121 American adults. The poll was conducted from August 15 to August 30, 2023.
